             Pittsburgh Sportsmen's Luncheon Club

In 1936 Pennsylvanians had become increasingly concerned about what was happening to our waterways. Steel mills, pulp mills and other heavy industry had been polluting our streams and rivers for years. In that same year, the Pittsburgh Press named Johnny Mock as its Outdoors Editor. Mr. Mock, a conservationist, was deeply concerned about the state of our waterways. He began thinking of ways to educate people about the need to bring a halt to pollution and ways to clean up Pennsylvania’s streams and rivers.

In addition to his talents as a writer, Johnny was an excellent organizer. He had a notion to share his ideas about clean waterways with other like-minded men; hence he formed the Pittsburgh Sportsmen’s Luncheon Club. The Club grew and Johnny began writing stories about members who traveled the region’s various waterways. As Johnny’s articles became popular, the publicity attracted more sportsmen to the Club. By 1938, Clean Streams Legislation was enacted in Pennsylvania and our Club was officially organized with the election of officers. Conservation has always been the keystone to our Club. We continue this tradition by interacting with conservation organizations such as Trout Unlimited, The Pennsylvania Audubon Society and The Ruffed Grouse Society.

Luncheon meetings were originally held at the old Hotel Henry, moving to several other venues before finding a home at the Harvard-Yale-Princeton/Pittsburgh Club.
